Fire Science Class Program Overview

The Fire Science Class Program is a training station where high school
juniors and seniors can train to become firefighters and potentially become an
EMT as well. Station 29 is located on-site
at the Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue
Headquarters Station. It is fully equipped with a classroom,
engine bay, fire engine, training equipment and a three-story training prop. At
Station 29, students learn how to maintain and operate their station while
preparing for a career in the fire service.
Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue’s Fire Science Class provides Cowlitz County high school
juniors and seniors with the unique opportunity to train for a career in the
fire service while earning 27 college credits. In two years, academy students
receive national training required of professional firefighters. First year
"Recruits" qualify for interior live fire structural attack and will be
Firefighter I (FFI)
qualified. Second year "Rookies" earn valuable certificates such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT),
Wildland Red Card and are Firefighter II (FFII) qualified.
First year students take Fire Science I and second year students take Fire
Science II. After completing Fire Science I students are assigned to a fire
station near where they live and are expected to drill with their assigned station and
respond to emergency calls while they complete Fire Science II. An EMT class is
also offered to these students. It is a great opportunity for a high school
student who is interested in a career in this field to take advantage of the
skills and qualifications that this class has to offer. At the end of
Fire Science II, students are considered veteran firefighters and are encouraged to
test for paid firefighter positions. Eighteen-year-old students who successfully
complete the Red Card class can also apply for wildland firefighting jobs.
