Interns

The Intern program was established to assist people considering a career in either the fire or emergency medical field, to experience life in a fire department, including daily housework, emergency response, public education, and other aspects, while continuing their education.

Do I Qualify?
Shift Interns are required to be 18 years old, attending a post secondary education program that is approved by the department, possess a valid driver’s license, and complete routine volunteer entrance requirements. Successful Shift Intern applicants will be contacted to determine their availability and assignment.

Q) Is this a job?
A) No, this is a volunteer position for which you are reimbursed through a point system.

Q) How much time must I commit to the program?
A) Once you qualify for the program, you must participate a minimum of eight shifts per month as a Shift Intern, during which time you are allowed to pre-arrange leave time to attend school. You may also accumulate points by serving as a member of C2FR with a volunteer station, participation in the Station 23 Day Shift Program, a special assignment, or additional time as a Shift Volunteer/Intern.

Q) Can I receive college credit for my participation?
A) Yes, you must pre-arrange this with your college advisor who will contact us or send for pre-approval documentation of what is expected of both you and the department.

Q) Does C2FR pay for my schooling?
A) The purpose of the point system is to assist with school costs while providing you an opportunity to experience hands-on application of the knowledge and skills you are learning.

Q) What if I have class or a job?
A) The Shift Intern Program is designed to assist the person attending school. Persons taking classes need to pre-arrange leaving for school with their Company Officer. Work schedules are expected to be worked around your regularly scheduled shift.
