Day Shift
Volunteers
(Station 23
Program)
The Day Shift
program was established to assist volunteer members in maintaining and advancing
their knowledge, skills, and abilities through training, experience, and
emergency response.
Do I qualify?
Station 23 Day Shift personnel are required to be 18 years old, members in good
standing with Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue, or a fire agency within Cowlitz or Clark
Counties, or currently attending the Fire Science programs of Lower Columbia or
Portland Community Colleges and approved by the program supervisor, or as
approved by the Chief of Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue or his designee.
Frequently asked questions?
Q) Is this a job?
A) No, this is a volunteer position that is intended to provide an opportunity
for individuals to further their knowledge and prepare themselves for volunteer
response, or to prepare individuals for a career in EMS or the fire service. You
are reimbursed through a point system for your time.
Q) How much time must I commit to the program?
A) There is no minimum time commitment for Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue regular
volunteer members in good standing. College students and members of outside
agencies, once qualified for the program, must participate a minimum of eight
hours per month and may work either four or eight hours per shift. Advance sign
up is not required, however, positions and credit for the day is not guaranteed
for walk-ins. Shifts are divided into halves; 0800-1200 and 1200-1600 Monday
through Friday. This is done so that participants may sign up for a specific
block of time or an entire shift. Additionally you may also accumulate points by
serving as a member of a volunteer station, participation in the
Intern Program, or
through a special assignment.
Q) Can I receive college credit for my participation?
A) Yes, you must pre-arrange this with your college advisor who will contact us
or send for pre-approval documentation of what is expected of both you and the
department.
