A Day in
the Life of a Firefighter
The following outline is an actual 24 hour shift on a Monday in
September at Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue. Each emergency call takes an average of
one hour (this includes ambulance transport to the hospital, paperwork and
vehicle readiness for the next response we are dispatched to). Our firefighters,
paramedics and EMTs must be ready to respond day or night no matter what they
are doing. The staffing for this day was: Engine 21 - 3 personnel, Medic 21 - 2
personnel, and Medic 22 - 2 personnel.
8:00 a.m. - Shift change
(oncoming crew relieves previous crew)
8:08 a.m. - Shift briefing (Company Officer outlines schedule for the day)
8:19 a.m. - Vehicle inspections (Crews inspect vehicles to assure readiness for
the day)
9:00 a.m. - Physical training
10:00 a.m. - Training (Loss control training, salvage and overhaul)
11:12 a.m. - Respond to a medical call (vehicle accident)
11:39 a.m. - Respond to a medical call (diabetic emergency)
12:30 p.m. - Lunch
12:38 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (vehicle accident)
1:21 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (fall victim)
1:32 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (fall victim)
2:00 p.m. - Business inspections (Crews inspect businesses to ensure fire code
compliance)
3:43 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (bicycle accident)
4:00 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (unknown medical)
4:21 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (chest pains)
4:42 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (bee sting)
5:00 p.m. - Station duties (outside yard maintenance at the fire station)
6:37 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (burn victim)
7:00 p.m. - Training with the volunteer stations
7:25 p.m. - Respond to a fire call (apartment fire)
8:15 p.m. - Dinner
9:26 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (suicidal person)
10:03 p.m. - Respond to a medical call (suicidal person)
4:00 a.m. - Respond to a medical call (seizure)
5:09 a.m. - Respond to a medical call (sick person)
7:00 a.m. - Morning station duties (station cleaning and wash vehicles)
7:53 a.m. - Respond to a medical call (car accident)
8:00 a.m. - Shift change (oncoming crew relieves previous crew)
8:54 a.m. - A shift relieved of duty
